As many of you know, I’ve spent most of the summer with Kenny in Aspen, Colorado, soaking up beautiful music and majestic mountain vistas. We’ve also connected with Jewish community in a variety of lovely and unexpected ways and made some new friends. We are both excited to return home next week to Chester County.
Heading into the High Holidays/Yamim Nora’im, with Makom Kadosh:The Jewish Fellowship of Chester County, there are many new things on the horizon!
This year, we will have a fabulous co-leader for the Friday night service that falls on the second Friday of each month. Daniella Forstater, who some of you met in June, is a gifted musician and prayer leader, will join us monthly beginning after the High Holidays/Yamim Nora’im. More about Daniella here.
The Lasko Family Foundation has generously awarded me a grant for “Chanting and Chocolate in Chester County.” We’ll begin on Sunday, November 18 at 7pm and run monthly at the fabulous new Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center in West Chester. No liturgy, no Hebrew needed. Simply to be with others and chant….and then eat chocolate.
We will have a discussion with my teacher and mentor, Rabbi Marcia Prager, about her book “The Path of Blessing,” in late October/early November. “The Path of Blessing” beautifully guides us through the six words that begin Hebrew blessings — Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheynu Melech Ha-olam, words that we often rush right on through without through or intentionality. Rabbi Prager helps us explore how each of these words can be a path for spiritual growth, connection to community, and to God. Location and date will be announced after the High Holidays/Yamim Nora’im.
We’ll continue with services and pot-luck every second and fourth Friday at 6:45 at Temenos Farm House. We will have innovative and meaning-filled holiday celebrations for Hanukah, Tu B’shvat, Purim, Pesach and Shavuot. Daniella and I will be integrating other holidays in to our Friday night services. In these ways, we create connections and community.
I’m reaching out reach to ask for your financial support for the coming year. For those who find a spiritual home with Makom Kadosh, we request $360/family or $180/individual. We are grateful and thank you in advance. If you come occasionally, or only for the High Holidays/Yamim Nora’im and wish to commit less, financially, that is appropriate. If you’d like to give more to support our work, thank you for your generosity. No one will ever be turned away because they did not or could not pay. Pay by check (made out to Makom Kadosh, and sent to 520 William Ebbs Lane West Chester, PA 19380) or with PayPal. You do not need a PayPal account, just go to: paypal.me/MakomKadosh.
You will find our High Holidays/Yamim Nora’im/Days of Awe-some schedule here. Once again, we have Rosh Hashanah lunch and Yom Kippur break-fast, and child care, at no cost, whether you support us financially or not.
Many blessings for a sweet and healthy New Year,
Rabbi Elyse Seidner-Joseph
